Insurance Discounts for Driver Training

We received an inquiry from a parent whose child took a rigorous driver safety training course above and beyond the basic Driver’s Ed program.

The question was: Why don’t insurers offer a discount for graduates of these programs? The answer is that many insurers do offer such discounts. In fact one of the programs says that:

Carriers representing approximately 85% of the market are now offering discounts between 5% and 10% for graduates of our program.

The state does not mandate discounts and I do not believe it would be appropriate for the state to do so. Fortunately, most major insurers recognize the value of safety training and have responded with appropriate discounts.
