H2672, An Act relative to same-sex marriage equality

Senator Brownsberger submitted the following testimony to the Joint Committee on Revenue.

TO:                  Joint Committee on Revenue

FROM:            Senator William N. Brownsberger

RE:                  H2672, An Act relative to same-sex marriage equality

DATE:             June 11, 2013

I am writing with regard to H2672, An Act relative to same-sex marriage equality. This legislation would reimburse same sex married couples who are state workers or state retirees from the tax penalties imposed on them regarding imputed income related to health insurance. Same-sex couples who put their spouses on their employer-provided health insurance pay thousands of dollars more in taxes every year due to the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.

This bill would make Massachusetts the first state in the nation to reimburse same-sex couples from this discriminatory tax.

I hope that the Committee will report H2672 favorably.
