H2093, An Act relative to the labeling of food

Senator Brownsberger submitted the following written testimony to the Committee on Public Health.

TO:           Committee on Public Health

 FROM:     Senator William N. Brownsberger

RE:            H2093, An Act relative to the labeling of food

 DATE:       June 11, 2013

I am writing in support of H2093, an Act relative to the labeling of food.

There is currently no requirement for the labeling of food that contains genetically engineered material.  Additionally, the FDA does not require any independent, publically available, long-term safety testing for genetically engineered foods.  Consumers deserve to know if the food products they are purchasing are genetically engineered or contain genetically engineered materials.

I hope that the Committee will report H2093 favorably.
