Alewife Circle Improvements at Rt. 2 and Rt. 16

Department of Transportation (DOT) officials have updated our office about the ongoing work to improve the Alewife Circle at the intersection of Routes 2 and 16. DOT’s reference number for this project is 605637. DOT is currently performing field testing this week and the agency expects the 75% submittal in March. Specifically, DOT began work to test pit borings to locate the gas line on Jan. 10th, 11th and will continue with that work today, Jan. 14th and tomorrow Jan. 15th, weather permitting. A survey crew will take shots on the pipe after the gas line has been exposed. This means that once they expose the gas pipe, they fit rods proportionately across the pipe. A camera then records where the rods are on the gas pipe. When the pipe is in the ground again, engineers can easily find it. The coordinates of the gas pipe are entered into a database for the gas company to keep the coordinates as to where the pipe is located for future use and reference. Furthermore, DOT hopes to have design projections by the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014.

  1. Hi – any further info on this? What are they hoping to accomplish? Any diagrams of proposed road changes?

  3. Two years ago on http://seeclickfix.com/issues/45367 , the Cambridge traffic engineer said MassDOT was planning:

“One additional lane westbound, which will eliminate the dangerous merge within the intersection. Also, and extra storage lane for the eastbound left, and an extra lane for the right turn onto Rt. 2 westbound from Alewife Brook Parkway.”

I think they should build a free-flowing ramp from the T garage to 2 westbound, as was originally planned.
