Temporary Closures Along the Paul Dudley White Path

From DCR:

DCR Recreational Advisory: Temporary Path Closures Along the Paul Dudley White Multi-Use Path in Boston

WHAT:          Starting on Monday, June 4, 2018, and continuing through the month of June 2018, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will close segments of the Paul Dudley White Multi-Use Path along the Charles River Esplanade within the City of Boston between the Boston University Bridge and Massachusetts Avenue (approximately 3,100 feet) to accommodate reconstruction and restoration work. Work will address uneven edges, pavement deterioration, and root damage along the path. Additionally, the project will include reconstruction, re-striping, loam and seeding of shoulders, and erosion controls to protect the adjacent Charles River. Alternative routes will be open and available along Memorial Drive in the City of Cambridge (attached is a detour map).

Paul Dudley White Path Detour Route

  1. What this path really needs is an additional ramp down from the west side of the mass ave bridge. So many bicyclists ride the sidewalk on the east side to get from cambridge to the esplanade path putting their centers of gravity well above the railing on the bridge. Without an additional bridge bicyclists have to cross mass ave dangerously at beacon street to turn around and get back on the esplanade.

    1. I work construction and also ride my bike on this path. There is absolutely no reason this could not have been done in March before the path gets busy in summer. I think it’s unbelievable that these “white hats” could not come up with a better plan.

  2. they should have figured out a way to do all of this without closing the path. this morning’s commute was a nightmare.

  3. I have had an equally nightmarish commute to the comments below so far this week and wanted to make my voice heard in case there is a chance that this kind of closure could be done at a better time next year. I don’t want to see the bike path closed for the month of June again.

  4. If there could be any way to provide a clearer map, I’d really appreciate it. The map from the state is even worse, the detour just randomly appears in the middle of Cambridge, no mention of how to cross the river. The map on this site is better, but does not include enough detail to clearly see the route.

  5. Why does the press release above say “between the Boston University Bridge and Massachusetts Avenue” when in fact the path is closed all the way from Cambridge Street to Massachusetts Avenue, almost twice as long?
