S.246 – An Act relative to school transportation parity

Senator Brownsberger has recently submitted the following testimony on S.246, An Act relative to school transportation parity:

TO:                  Joint Committee on Education

FROM:            Senator William N. Brownsberger

RE:                  S.246, An Act relative to school transportation parity

DATE:             October 13th, 2015

I am writing to express support for S.246, An Act relative to school transportation parity.

Under existing law, school districts are required to provide transportation for all students who attend both district and charter schools within their municipality. Transportation costs can represent a significant portion of district budgets; nearly 10% of the Boston Public School budget is spent on transportation.

This bill will reduce costs by making changes to the law that would allow districts to maximize the efficiency of the deployment of their bus fleets by requiring greater coordination of scheduling between district schools and charters.

By reducing transportation costs for school districts, more funding will be available for educating students. I hope the committee will report S.246 favorably.
