Dear Senator Brownsberger,
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in these important environmental initiatives.
I am writing to share my concerns regarding the condition of the Charles River banks. While I appreciate the annual cleanup, I believe this should be a permanent and structured task. The volume of trash along the banks from the Arsenal Bridge to the North Beacon Bridge is significant, and annual volunteer efforts are not enough to address the scale of the issue.
I am concerned that the DCR is not adequately maintaining this area. Furthermore, there is a growing problem with individuals camping or living in tents near the IHOP area, which has led to a staggering amount of garbage and plastic waste. I believe the surrounding cities, including Brighton, Allston, Boston, and Cambridge, should work toward housing solutions for these individuals. Additionally, I suggest that the DCR prohibit camping on the riverbanks through signage and enforcement.
Finally, I have noticed that the DCR does not appear to replace diseased trees once they are removed. I hope your office can encourage them to plant new trees to restore the natural vegetation.
I have attempted to contact the DCR multiple times without success. I would appreciate it if someone from your office could follow up with them regarding these matters.
Thank you for your attention to these concerns.
