Last night, the Senate approved our criminal justice reform package by a vote of 27-10 – a major milestone in an effort that goes back over 20 years for me.

An intern in my office, Aja Watkins has completed a survey of age exemptions in other states.

The Senate Ways and Means version of the criminal justice reform bill includes a number of improvements, both technical and substantive. Here are the most important substantive changes.

One section of the broad criminal justice reform bill before the senate would take away the possibility that consensual sex among kids close-in-age could be prosecuted.

There will always be some prisoners who need to remain in solitary, but our legislation, if effectively implemented, should result in shorter average stays in solitary confinement.  Prisoners leaving solitary should also be much better prepared to return to general population or to the street.
