Senator Brownsberger submitted the following written testimony to the Joint Committee on the Judiciary.
TO: Committee on the Judiciary
FROM: Senator William N. Brownsberger
RE: S796, An Act updating privacy protections for personal electronic information
DATE: July 9, 2013
I write in support of S796, An Act updating privacy protections for personal electronic information. This bill would require law enforcement to obtain a warrant to access personal electronic information held by phone and internet companies. It would also update and improve long-standing practices in order to comply with constitutional requirements of obtaining a warrant from a court in order to search an individual’s personal property.
I hope that the Committee will report S796 favorably.
Will,
Thanks for your support of this important step in privacy protection!
We did, in fact, report the this bill favorably out committee on July 1. (Subsequent to authoring this testimony, I became senate chair of the Judiciary Committee.)
