Senator Brownsberger is sponsoring several bills relative to bike safety this session, four of which were heard before the Transportation Committee on January 6. Bill S1810 seeks to expand on a program piloted on a limited basis by Cambridge and Boston that requires trucks to be equipped with side guards to prevent cyclists and pedestrians struck by a truck from being struck again by the rear wheels of the vehicle.
To learn more about the complexities of the highly regulated trucking industry and how the bill would impact tanker truck drivers, the Senator did a site visit to Houghton Chemical in Allston on January 14. He met with owner Bruce Houghton to discuss the engineering and safety obstacles to adaptation of side guards to the tanker trucks operated by Houghton.
The Senator will continue to meet with stakeholders as this legislation is refined and moved forward.
