From MassDOT:
Massachusetts Avenue Closure, Detours, and Parking Restrictions for Full Bridge Replacement, May 10-15
In order to replace the City of Boston’s bridge that carries Massachusetts Avenue over Commonwealth Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue north and southbound will be closed in the vicinity of the bridge between the Commonwealth Avenue surface roadways in Back Bay from 10:00 PM on Thursday, May 10, to 5:00 AM on Tuesday, May 15. The Commonwealth Avenue bypass roadways under the bridge will be closed to traffic as well.
Additionally, there will be a 19-day closure of the east and westbound Commonwealth Avenue bypass roadways under the bridge from Saturday, May 5, through Wednesday, May 23. The closures are necessary for the contractor to have access to the bridge substructure to prepare for and complete the full bridge replacement.
During the May 10 to 15 closure, through vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic will be detoured. Local access will be maintained to residences and businesses. At the direction of the City of Boston, parking will not be permitted along the detour routes to accommodate the additional traffic. The parking restrictions are necessary based on a public safety review to maintain emergency response access to area buildings and to minimize congestion due to higher traffic volumes on the roadways. Please view the parking restrictions flyer for details. Parking will be maintained on Massachusetts Avenue; however, parking on Commonwealth Avenue between Charlesgate East and Hereford Street will not be allowed because it is a detour route. City and State teams will monitor traffic conditions throughout the weekend and will make adjustments, as feasible, to minimize disruption and congestion.
MBTA bus service for Routes 1 and CT1 may be delayed due to the detour. Some bus stops within the project area will be closed or relocated. View the bus stop flyer for details.
Vehicle Detour Routes (see the detour map):
- Northbound Detour Route: From Massachusetts Avenue, vehicles traveling northbound will turn right onto Boylston Street and then turn left onto Hereford Street. Continue on Hereford Street, turn left onto Beacon Street, and then turn right onto Massachusetts Avenue to continue northbound.
- Southbound Detour Route: From Massachusetts Avenue, vehicles traveling southbound will turn right onto Beacon Street, turn left onto Charlesgate West, and then left onto Commonwealth Avenue. Continue on Commonwealth Avenue and bear right at the closed bypass roadway using the surface roadway to reach Massachusetts Avenue and turn right to continue southbound.
Bicyclist and Pedestrian Detour Route (see the detour map)
- Through bicycle and pedestrian traffic should use the crossings at Charlesgate East and Hereford Street.
