Farm Animal Cruelty

Mary Mahony writes:

Hi Will,

I am writing to you in support of [the legislation] that bans gestation crates and veal crates. I am also very concerned about the Farm Bureau Bill. If passed they are not at all financially neutral and again, this could determine the fate of many animals in a very negative way.

It is actually quite concerning to me that many people have no idea of what goes on with the meat they are eating before it gets to their plates. If they did know, they might perhaps eat less of it and what they did eat, become very selective about where it is purchased. Mary

I share your concerns about farm animal cruelty. According to all I have been in contact with — and I have had extensive conversations with animal protection groups — we don’t have veal crates or gestation crates on any farm in Massachusetts. However, the legislation has prophylactic value and, more importantly, symbolic value in the nationwide fight to improve conditions in “factory farms.” I feel that Massachusetts should stand up on this issue and that doing so would be of benefit to local farmers — with this legislation in place they can more effectively certify that they are humane farmers.

For these reasons, I have been a strong and consistent supporter of the humane confinement legislation. I worked hard to get the support together to move it out of my committee, the Judiciary Committee, to the full Senate. I am now working to get support together for moving it to active floor consideration.

Update on August 2, 2014: To my chagrin, this is one of the bills that did not get through the final gate this session. Opposition from farm interests was impossible to overcome. Farm interests in Massachusetts said that they felt the bill, by prohibiting practices that they did not engage in anyway, was an unfair “black-eye” for them. My view was that they should embrace it as a certificate of quality which would justify the higher prices for meat from small local farms. My view did not prevail.

Please see this thread for more on my work in this area.

  5. Dear Senator Browsberger,

Thank you for your leadership in addressing the issue of farm animal cruelty in Senate Bill 2232.

In 2012 I adopted a potbelly pig in a severe situation need of rescue from craigslist. At the time, he was only 14 pounds and expected to grow only to 50lbs. Wilbur is now 300 lbs.

..So the first thing I learned was that breeders who sell “mini” pigs — are in reality, not mini at all.

The 2nd thing I learned ( after being a cat/dog person my whole life) was how astonishingly smart, emotional and Aware pigs are. Not only in watching the sheer intelligence of Wilbur as he matured ( pigs are the 4th smartest animals on the planet ) – but also when I joined a community of other pig owners all siting the same types of behaviors, intelligence and awareness.

The thought of the brutal lives they live through factory farming cycle — when they are at THIS level of awareness -is absolutely horrific. The average person has no idea. I had no idea.

Pigs, Cows/Calves – all meat animals – feel pain. But more than that.. they morn when their babies are ripped from them, their bones ache in being kept in tiny cramped and uncomfortable crates and cages. There has always been documentation supporting the sheer terror they feel at slaughter.. why would they not feel and suffer in any other situation ?

Please ANYTHING we can do improve this, chipping away wherever we can. We are better than this – we CAN do this.

Thank you so much for caring.

    Thanks again.

    Sincerely,
    Monica Hope

  8. I am in total support of any legislation that regulates the inhumane treatment of farm animals. These animals are sentient beings, they can feel love, fear, and they feel pain when injury is inflicted upon them. There is no reason for inhumane confinement, or abuse by farm workers upon any animal. Anyone who willfully inflicts unnecessary pain and/or suffering upon these animals should be prosecuted. For if humanity can torture one species, I find it impossible to believe that they would have true compassion for any other species. And it is this that we teach our children, the future of America. Thank You for your leadership and support of this bill.

  9. Thank you for taking a stand to ensure humane treatment of all animals, including farm animals. All living creatures deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. It’s amazing to think that this is still an issue in the year 2014. I support Senate Bill 2232.

When polled, over 90% of the general public support the ban of extreme confinement systems. This issue will certainly go to a ballot measure if not acted on prior to July 31.

Let’s make this happen. I hope our elected officials address this bill and to do the right thing now.

“An Act act to ensure continued humane animal care in Massachusetts”. I am horrified as to how, in this day and age, animals are still being treated. We all need to take a lesson from the great Ghandi. All living creatures deserve humane treatment and a life free from pain and fear.

A special thanks to Debra White, as well, for all she does for all the beloved animlas at Winslow Animal Farm.

  15. Please eliminate veal crates and all other cruel animal farming methods. I believe we have enough knowledge and compassion to find a way to feed our families without letting animals lead lives of torture that end inhumanely.

  28. Dear Mr. Brownsberger, Please support this bill to ensure that farm animals are treated more humanely. If people are consuming these animals, they should desire that they are kept in good conditions, treated well and are not sickly. I do not eat animal products, but believe that these sentient beings should be treated as well as possible for their short lives. It would benefit all life. Thank you for your time, Barbara Maddocks

  29. Dear Senator Brownsberger,
I feel it is necessary to write to you because farm animals are being mistreated at an alarming rate and this is so wrong. These animals have emotions, feel pain, want families and friends and are LIFE. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DO THE RIGHT THING WITH BILL 2232 RE THESE ANIMALS. I don’t understand how anybody in their right mind could hurt a living thing that feels pain just as we do. It is unusually cruel and inhumane to do these things. I am begging you to help these voiceless animals.
Thanking you in advance of your help.

“An Act act to ensure continued humane animal care in Massachusetts” Thank you for standing up for beautiful innocent creatures that have no voice. We must let the public know the price these animals pay and the cruelty they endure, it is UNCONSCIONABLE !

  34. I support your efforts to ban gestation crates and veal crates. Please count me in. I have rescue dog that spent most of her young life in a crate. When I look at her I don’t understand why anyone would put her in a crate and just forget about her. No animal should experience this.

  35. Dear Sir – Please make a concentrated effort to end cruelty to farm animals. Ending cruelty altogether would be wonderful. There really is no appropriate time or place for cruelty.

    Respectfully,
