I think that BMLD should consider using more transformers, rather than two 50 megawatt units. This would enable us to match the on-line capacity to the actual load more closely.
Consider the savings in the cost of the iron loss in a 50 megawatt transformer not needed to meet demand:
Iron loss at 0.25 % = 125 kilowatts
Cost at 5 cents per kilowatt hour = $6.25 per hour
Annual cost (8760 hours) = $54,760
This will support more than $1 million in 5% bonds or pay off a 20year, 5% loan of $682,000 or a 20 year, 4% loan of $744,000 .The savings would continue after pay off and Belmont would be “greener”.
