We have heard from several Brighton residents that are concerned about the new street sweeping schedule for Commonwealth Avenue and surrounding streets. These changes are being implemented by the City of Boston Public Works Department. I received this explanation from Public Works regarding the new sweeping schedule:
The Public Works Department has received numerous complaints about cleanliness on both Commonwealth Avenue and Chestnut Hill Avenue and we therefore proceeded with the implementation of the posted street sweeping program. Each year we are continuing to add posted streets in the denser neighborhoods of Boston, all of which have been requested from residents through the Mayor’s office and/or City Councilors.
These expansions have been very successful in providing a cleaner environment as the sweeper can now access the gutter areas on a regular basis. Very populated neighborhoods such as the North End, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, South End, South Boston, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, and other neighborhoods as well as most of Allston/Brighton have had this program for years. Residents have been quick to incorporate the twice-monthly inconvenience between April and November into their routines. The even side is posted for the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month and the odd side is the 1st & 3rd.
We received additional feedback from residents concerned that the new sweeping, which will coincide with DCR‘s monthly sweeping of Chestnut Hill Driveway, will displace a large number of cars once a month. Our office asked DCR to change the sweeping schedule for Chestnut Hill Driveway, unfortunately DCR has already contracted for this service and no changes can be made. Chestnut Hill Driveway is only swept 8 times per year from April through November.
