Re: Support of the Ayer Mansion Nomination
2014 Preservation Awards
Dear Secretary Galvin:
I am writing in support of the nomination of the Ayer Mansion façade project for a 2014 Preservation Award.
The Ayer Mansion is an important resource in my district and its preservation is important to the Commonwealth as well as my constituents. The Ayer Mansion stands alone as the only example of the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Moreover, the very public nature of the artwork on this building – magnificent Tiffany-designed mosaics on the facade that every passerby can enjoy – makes this a truly public masterpiece that we should all work to protect.
After a year of hard work by the Campaign for the Ayer Mansion and its preservation team, the mosaics gracing the façade have been carefully repaired and regrouted, the badly stained façade cleaned and repointed, and the missing mosaic panels faithfully recreated. The mansion has, in effect, been brought back to life.
I urge the Massachusetts Historical Commission to recognize this work with a 2014 Preservation Award.
Sincerely,
William N. Brownsberger
State Senator
