Climate change is creating more rainfall and higher sea levels, both of which will contribute to more flooding in our neighborhoods. We have a couple of decades before the problems really come home, but the lead times are long for major projects. Understanding the risks and building regional momentum to respond will remain a continuing priority of mine over the years to come.

Public Records Reform
The Senate Ways and Means Committee yesterday released the Senate’s Public Records reform bill. It is a big step forward that has pleased advocates for reform. I will be supporting the bill — transparency has been an important theme in my work. One issue that I am interested in feedback on is attorneys fees. I would also really appreciate hearing any personal experiences you have had with this issue generally.
OK, let’s ban hand-held cell phone use while driving.
I’ve gotten a huge volume of feedback on the legislative proposal to ban hand-held phone use. The feedback I have received has convinced me to support the proposal.
Ban hand-held cell phone use while driving?
Next week, the Senate will vote on a proposal to ban use of hand-held cell phones while driving. As a frequent cyclist, I am a “vulnerable road user” and do live in fear of distracted drivers. But I am not sure how I’ll vote yet. I’d really like to hear from folks on this one.
Animal abuse registry
I’ve recently received dozens of emails urging me to support legislating creating an animal abuser registry. I support the goals of this legislation, but I think it needs more work.
Upcoming vote on tax proposal
This spring, the legislature will consider a voter initiative to raise the income tax on people earning over one million dollars. A hearing is scheduled on Tuesday, 1/19, from 10:30 AM-1:00 PM in room B-1 in the State House. I am fully committed to vote to put the proposal on the ballot and ultimately, you the voters will decide its fate. I’m very interested in your thoughts.
